Counselling & Psychotherapy FAQs

What's the difference between counselling and therapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are both forms of talking therapy and the terms are often used interchangeably. Counselling may focus on a particular issue or difficulty, while psychotherapy can involve exploring experiences and patterns in greater depth. The approach will always depend on you, what brings you to therapy and what you would like to explore.

How long will I need to have therapy or counselling?

The number of appointments depends on you and is discussed at the initial appointment when an agreed number of sessions is arranged. Individual therapy is tailored to your individual needs. Some people require a shorter number of sessions when experiencing a particularly stressful time in their lives, while others may need something longer term. Couple counselling is shorter term, on average 6 appointments but can be longer up to 12 weeks.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

This depends on what availability I have and what day and time you are requesting. If I have space you can usually be seen quickly for an initial appointment. If I don't have space immediately, you have the option of joining a waiting list.

Can I bring a friend or relative with me?

You are unable to bring a friend or relative to the actual appointment, unless your appointment is for relationship counselling when you attend as a couple. Unfortunately there isn't a waiting area.

What is your cancellation policy?

A cancellation payment is required if I haven't received a minimum of 4 days' notice.

Is what I say confidential?

What is discussed during your appointment remains private and confidential and is not shared with any other individual or organisation, except when I receive supervision, during which I discuss aspects of my work to ensure I am working safely and ethically.

The only other time confidentiality is shared with outside agencies is in exceptional circumstances, e.g. where there appears to be a serious risk of harm to yourself or others. If this situation arose, I would firstly speak to my supervisor and try to involve you in any action that would need to be taken to ensure your safety and that of others.

Do you comply with any recognised standards?

I abide by the Code of Ethics of the Welsh Psychotherapy Institute, in association with the Scarborough Psychotherapy Training Institute, which is an accredited member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).
